Mercury Retrograde and Venus Enters Aquarius While the Sun and Mars Square Off

 

The first month of 2021 is coming to a close and Aquarius season is in full swing.  On January 28, we had a Full Moon in 9 degrees of Leo opposing the Sun in Aquarius, inspiring me to tweet:

We have a complicated #fullmoon in Leo today that squares both Mars and Uranus in Taurus which ups the ante for aggressive actions and sudden emotional upheavals. Venus and Pluto are conjunct in Capricorn which adds an obsessive and power struggle vibe. #astrology

The year 2020 was dominated by cardinal energy, with Saturn, Jupiter and Pluto in Capricorn.  Now that Saturn and Jupiter are in the fixed sign of Aquarius, fixed energy is becoming more predominant and calling the shots.  In fact, astrologer Anne Ortelee describes it as all of the planets reporting to Saturn in Aquarius.  Cardinal planets are the movers and the shakers, but when the heavy hitting planets are in fixed signs, there is a more measured and careful approach taken.  This will be the theme of 2021, a highly transitional year.

I am sure many of you have been feeling it already, but on January 30, Mercury will officially station retrograde in 26 degrees of Aquarius and will station direct on February 20 in 11 degrees of Aquarius.  I think that Mercury’s entrance into its shadow period on January 15 triggered the flicker of recognition of what this Mercury Retrograde would be like.  In case you are interested, Mercury departs its retrograde shadow period on March 13 in 26 degrees of Aquarius. 

Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius can be particularly challenging.  For starters, Mercury in Aquarius is opinionated and prone to a know-it-all persona.  It is fixed energy, so it’s stubborn.  But it does have the perk of being able to deliver innovative ideas; hold onto concept that in the coming weeks. And because Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, it can wreak mayhem with technology.  Watch out for computer problems; back up everything.  I live in Massachusetts and this week it was announced that the COVID-19 vaccination would become available to seniors over 75.  I have been valiantly trying to schedule an appointment for my husband since it is supposed to be available the first week of February, but I have had absolutely no luck.  Several times I thought I had an appointment but by the final click I kept getting a message that the appointment was gone.  And don’t get me started on the number of sites I clicked on that had no vaccines available. This is a prime example of Mercury Retrograde, and it was still in the shadow period.

The month of February is starting off on a somewhat rocky note.  On February 1, the Sun in Aquarius and Mars in Taurus are exactly square in 12 degrees of their respective signs.  Once again, we are dealing with a lot of fixed energy.  I also have a natal Sun-Mars square in my chart involving the signs Scorpio and Aquarius, so I am all too familiar with what this aspect brings to the table; I have been dealing with it my whole life. It is a contentious vibe, as the need for freedom is clashing with the urge to dominate and it occurs in two fixed signs that are very stubborn.  We could very well be facing tests of character from enemies or competitors as we are forced to defend our goals and desires.  The Sun square Mars is inherently defensive and actually better off this way as opposed to be being on the offense.  We could also be dealing with a build-up of anger, resentment and sexual frustration.  If this happens to you, I encourage you to find a productive outlet like exercise.

But we also have Venus changing signs on February 1.  It moves into Aquarius where it stays until the 25^th. We can breathe a sigh of relief that there is no Venus Retrograde this year, like last year.  Venus in Aquarius is highly unconventional, independent and freedom loving.  We will also be approaching relationships and finances in a more analytical fashion.  When Venus is in Aquarius, we are more inclined to treat people fairly and friends are extremely important to us.  This is also a time when someone that you considered to be “just a friend” evolves into “the one.”  It’s quite possible that someone who has been literally under your nose all along is seen in a whole new light because Venus in Aquarius values friendship as an important element in a relationship.

The coronavirus outbreak is causing me to increase the number of distant Reiki sessions I do because people are concerned about the spread of the infection. I have decided to suspend my in-person Reiki sessions until further notice in order to practice social distancing. I recently learned that I no longer have my Brookline office, so all of my Reiki sessions will be distant Reiki sessions for the foreseeable future. When it becomes clearer that the virus no longer poses a threat, I will find a new space to practice. In the meantime, a distant Reiki session is the perfect opportunity to safely build up your immune system and if you have contracted coronavirus, you can be treated safely from the comfort of your home. My procedure is to have a conversation with a client about what they hope to achieve from a session, we set up a time for the session to take place when they will be in a state to receive healing energy and I follow up with a telephone conversation to discuss their experience and my perception of their blockages. I do miss seeing my clients, so I am now offering Zoom consultations/intakes before the session so that we can see each other. I have also incorporated a new technique with my distance Reiki treatments since I don’t always have a photo of my client.  I use a teddy bear so that I can scan and focus the healing energy where it is needed. Reality Bites with the Sun Conjunct Saturn in Aquarius and a Full Moon in Leo

 

The United States survived the Mars-Uranus square on January 20, 2021.  Like many astrologers, I had major concerns about the Inauguration and expressed it on Twitter:

Enthusiasm was running high on that day but no one can deny that the reality of our problems still exists. We have a powerful Full Moon in 9 degrees of Leo on January 28 but before that we have the Sun and Saturn conjunct in 4 degrees of Aquarius on January 23 along with Mars in Taurus exactly squaring Jupiter in 4 degrees of Aquarius on the same day.

I have a natal Sun-Saturn conjunction in Scorpio, so I am all too familiar with what this aspect means.  It will provide a major reality check and requires hard work, discipline and patience in order to achieve goals.  Extra responsibilities are part and parcel as is an emphasis on structures.  There are no shortcuts with these two planets hooking up. But the perk of having this aspect occur in a fixed sign is the inherent tenacity; we won’t give up easily.

But having Mars in Taurus squaring Jupiter in Aquarius on the same day is a whole different ball game.  There is definitely energy and initiative to start new projects and take the risks necessary to accomplish our objectives in a big way.  Courage is strong but we need to be mindful not to go into attack mode but choose our battles wisely.  Avoid acting too rashly in order to preserve our energy levels. 

The first Full Moon of 2021 is in 9 degrees of Leo on January 28.  A Full Moon in Leo has themes pertaining to leadership and heart energy.  Full Moons have a way of providing closure, completion and shining light on secrets.  This particular Full Moon can provide some closure on a cycle that began with the New Moon in Leo on August 18, 2020.  Think back to whatever began for you back then to see what has transpired in your life.

This will be a complicated, Full Moon with a T-square pattern involving the Moon in Leo opposing the Sun, Saturn and Jupiter in Aquarius and squaring Mars and Uranus in Taurus.  It’s a lot of fixed energy and tempers could flare more than with the usual Full Moon because this is a very combative vibe.  The Moon squaring Mars in Taurus amps up the frustration level and its opposition to Jupiter in Aquarius can make us lazy, self-centered and prone to excessive behavior.  The perk of the Full Moon opposing Jupiter though is that it holds the potential to be a very creative period that is growth oriented and can provide hopeful opportunity.  Hold that thought.  But the Moon opposing Saturn will place some limitations and restrictions in our path and could induce a temporary feeling of depression. 

We have one other major aspect that serves to complicate this Full Moon.  Venus and Pluto are conjunct in 25 degrees of Capricorn.  This adds another layer of intensity to the mix in relationships, so watch out for guilt trips and manipulative behavior.  Compulsion and obsession are also featured when Venus and Pluto hang out together.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the most positive aspect of this Full Moon.  Yes, I saved the best for last. The Sun and Jupiter are conjunct in 9 degrees of Aquarius and this will bestow a general feeling of happiness and optimism.  We can literally be feeling lucky and open to opportunities for growth.  Just don’t be too greedy about whatever manifests and remember to embrace the heart-centered theme of a Full Moon in Leo by being kind to others.

It’s All about Uranus This Week

 

Saturn in Aquarius may be the boss these days, as evidenced by the recent square it received from Mars in Taurus on January 13, but Uranus is getting its fair share of action this week.

Uranus in Taurus has been retrograde since August 15, 2020, but it stationed direct on January 14, 2021, inspiring me to tweet:

The major astrological event of today is Uranus stationing direct in Taurus after being retrograde since August 2020. Changes are coming even more swiftly and suddenly now so hang on and go with the flow. #astrology

The prevailing astrological theme of 2021 will be the Saturn-Uranus squares that occur on February 17, June 15 and December 24.  This aspect brings change instigated by Uranus but accompanied by resistance from Saturn, so expect a great deal of tension because these changes are bound to be unexpected and not always welcome. But they do serve a purpose in terms of weeding out what is no longer serving our best interests. 

But now that Uranus is direct (until August 19) it is ready to bring on the changes in its own disruptive style.  On January 17, 2021, Jupiter in Aquarius exactly squares Uranus in 6 degrees of Taurus.  Since the planet Jupiter loves to expand whatever it touches, the quest for freedom and the revolutionary nature of Uranus will be highlighted and political freedom is part and parcel of this aspect.  Sudden changes in life direction are likely, as are changes in fortunes.  With Uranus in the earth sign of Taurus, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of earthquakes or volcanos either.  The important thing to remember is that we need to exercise a measure of caution and not just jump blindly for the sake of change.

On January 19, 2021, the Sun enters Aquarius, which is ruled by Uranus.  This is a more idealistic time with a greater focus on humanity and the collective good, which is a marked change from the Sun in Capricorn, which is all about individual achievements.  When the Sun is in Aquarius, we are motivated to express originality and experience freedom from restrictions.

Mars in 6 degrees of Taurus is exactly conjunct Uranus in Taurus on January 20, 2021.  This is Inauguration Day in the United States, and given the recent attack on the Capitol, there are massive concerns about more violence erupting.  Mar-Uranus contacts have a theme of sudden violence, but it can also pertain to natural disasters like the aforementioned earthquakes and volcanoes.  There will be a strong urge to break free of limitations accompanied by a tendency to act spontaneously.  It’s definitely an understatement to say that this is very erratic energy.  The most positive interpretation of this aspect is that it does usher in a two-year cycle of new beginnings.  If you are curious as to how this will play out in your life, look at where Mars and Uranus in Taurus fall in your chart or book a reading with me. It’s also important to know where your natal Mars is; mine is in Aquarius in my 4^th house and is being widely squared by this conjunction occurring in my 7^th house. 

The Mars-Uranus conjunction is a very stressful aspect and the most productive way of handling it is to relax as much as possible.  The harder we fight its energy, the more difficult it will be for us to process.  The expression “go with the flow” has never been more relevant.  Between the Mars-Uranus conjunction and the upcoming Saturn-Uranus squares, I am reminded of the Uranus in Aries/Pluto in Capricorn squares of 2012-2015.  I don’t know about you, but my life was pretty chaotic back then.  I learned that the only way to survive was to treat it like a wave that was carrying me to a new shore and that I had to ride the wave, not fight it.  It was an unsettling time in which I had health problems, left a job in the real world and established myself as an astrologer and Reiki practitioner.  Was it easy?  Hell, no.  But I do not regret the decisions that I made back then and I know that I will have to make new decisions this year, like everyone else in the world.

The Moon also enters Taurus on the 20^th at 1:56 p.m. and squares both the Sun and Saturn in Aquarius, so it has all of the earmarks of a challenging day that is chock full of limitations and restrictions.  And on the 21^st, the Moon will be conjunct Uranus in Taurus, which holds the potential for some emotional upheavals.

Venus and Mercury Change Signs and a Pivotal New Moon in Capricorn

 

No one can say that 2021 is a dull year so far.  Like many people, I am still reeling from the recent attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021 that occurred when Mars was still in 29 degrees of Aries.  Mars did enter Taurus at 5:27 p.m. but the damage was done.  Four people are dead as a result.

I have been trying to believe that 2021 would be different and better in terms of being able to build a new reality despite the challenges we face from COVID-19 and political unrest.  In fact, on January 3^rd, I tweeted:

Well, more planetary changes are coming this week and they do involve a lot of earth energy.  On January 8^th, Venus enters the sign of Capricorn.  This will be a marked change from Venus in Sagittarius as the economic realities are faced head on and we become more security conscious.  Never forget that Venus is love and money.  Things are about to get more serious.  In terms of relationships, we will be seeking a greater sense of commitment and people that support our values and ambitions.  Venus is only in Capricorn until February 1, so make the most of this influence.

Mercury is changing signs on the 8^th as well.  It enters the fixed air sign of Aquarius until March 15, 2021. Why such an extended stay? Well, folks, we have our first Mercury Retrograde of 2021 coming up on January 30^th when Mercury stations retrograde in 26 degrees of Aquarius and it stations direct in 11 degrees of Aquarius on February 20, 2021.

Mercury in Aquarius encourages us to think outside of the box and be more open to progressive ideas.  It’s got a very liberal vibe that we need during these challenging times.  But it has a rocky start with a square to Mars in 0 degrees of Taurus, which is likely to manifest in anger and arguments.  We could also see some passive-aggressive behavior.  The bottom line with Mercury in Aquarius is that we are seeking freedom and truth.

The next major event is the New Moon in 23 degrees of Capricorn on January 13^th.  This is a pivotal New Moon for a multitude of reasons.  For starters, it is hitting the Saturn-Pluto conjunction of January 12, 2020 that occurred in 22 degrees of Capricorn.  We are getting a major reality check regarding discipline and duty and the lesson to get rid of what we don’t need is being drilled into our heads.  It is literally completing a cycle that began with the Full Moon in 3 degrees of Capricorn on June 24, 2020.  Saturn may have moved into Aquarius, but it is still pretty close to Pluto in 24 degrees of Capricorn so the effects of the 2020 Saturn-Pluto conjunction are not over by a long shot. 

I loved what astrologer Penny Thornton said about this New Moon representing a new beginning coming out of challenging circumstances; that really nails the theme of this New Moon.  We need to work on our material and financial structures, detox our life, and make important decisions by acting responsibly. 

We are also dealing with quite a few tension filled aspects on the New Moon.  Mars in Taurus is squaring Saturn in Aquarius, which will make us feel like any actions that we want to take are thwarted.  I have a natal Mars-Saturn square, so I am all too familiar with this vibration.  And we have the Moon moving into Aquarius on the 13^th conjunct Saturn in Aquarius and squaring Mars and Uranus in Taurus, which should rattle some cages with authority figures because the status quo is being challenged by more progressive ideas. We can’t rule out the possibility of more protests and skirmishes. Not to mention that the Sun and Pluto are conjunct in Capricorn on the New Moon, which has a definite bully vibe with its quest for power.  However, I would like to mention that we do have a couple of more positive aspects on the New Moon that could save the day if we are open to them.  Venus in Capricorn is trining Uranus in Taurus, which can bring some pleasant changes.  I also have this aspect natally and it is a keeper, trust me.  And the Moon in Aquarius conjuncts Jupiter in 5 degrees of Aquarius at 9:55 p.m., which is a very lucky and fortuitous placement. It is literally our guardian angel, so keep the faith that we will survive and prosper.

On January 14, 2021, Uranus will station direct in 6 degrees of Taurus after having been retrograde since August 15, 2020 in 10 degrees of Taurus. Any urges that we have been suppressing for the past five months will erupt with shocking force. The wild ride will continue as sudden and unexpected events with finances are not out of the question now.

The coronavirus outbreak is causing me to increase the number of distant Reiki sessions I do because people are concerned about the spread of the infection. I have decided to suspend my in-person Reiki sessions until further notice in order to practice social distancing. I recently learned that I no longer have my Brookline office, so all of my Reiki sessions will be distant Reiki sessions for the foreseeable future. When it becomes clearer that the virus no longer poses a threat, I will find a new space to practice. In the meantime, a distant Reiki session is the perfect opportunity to safely build up your immune system and if you have contracted coronavirus, you can be treated safely from the comfort of your home. My procedure is to have a conversation with a client about what they hope to achieve from a session, we set up a time for the session to take place when they will be in a state to receive healing energy and I follow up with a telephone conversation to discuss their experience and my perception of their blockages. I do miss seeing my clients, so I am now offering Zoom consultations/intakes before the session so that we can see each other. I have also incorporated a new technique with my distance Reiki treatments since I don’t always have a photo of my client.  I use a teddy bear so that I can scan and focus the healing energy where it is needed. Happy New Year 2021 as Mercury in Capricorn Flexes its Muscle and Mars Moves into Taurus

 

I am sure that I am not alone when I say that I am glad to bid 2020 adieu. The year 2020 was one tough year and it ended on an extremely emotional note with a Full Moon in Cancer on December 29, 2020.  On that day I tweeted:

Today is the last #FullMoon of 2020 in Cancer, just like the 1st full moon in January. It squares Chiron in Aries which has a strong theme of healing challenges. It also inconjuncts both Saturn and Jupiter in Aquarius requiring some adjustments. #astrology

I don’t know about you, but I found this Full Moon to be extremely challenging and exhausting.  I heard from people that I hadn’t been in touch with for a while and I certainly had some emotional buttons pushed.  But on some level I realize that all of this was necessary for our growth.

How is 2021 beginning? For starters, the Moon is in party-loving Leo squaring off with Uranus in Taurus, which could lead to some major overindulgences and accidents as people are inclined to cut loose.  We have spent the better part (over nine months to be exact) dealing with the frustrations and limitations of the pandemic.  This could also lead to another surge of the Coronavirus, so please try to be careful however you celebrate and don’t engage in large gatherings.

But the New Year does start off on a somewhat hopeful note with Mercury in Capricorn forming a supportive sextile to Neptune in Pisces.  This aspect is exact in 18 degrees, so if you have any planets near 18 degrees of Scorpio, Cancer, Capricorn, Pisces, Taurus and Virgo, you will reap the benefits. Mercury and Neptune connecting on this level brings very positive mental energy with constructive plans for the future. It’s also very creative and spiritual to boot, which is a delightful way to start the New Year. Hello, New Year’s resolutions!

Mercury is moving into Aquarius on January 8, but it also makes one last major aspect on the 4^th when it conjuncts Pluto in 24 degrees of Capricorn.  This aspect has a theme of making us more serious about transforming our lives with its depth and intensity and its capacity for psychological analysis.  It is exactly conjunct my natal Chiron in Capricorn in my 4^th house and I have received more requests for distance Reiki treatments this week which I hope continues.

The major event this coming week is the ingress of Mars into Taurus.  Due to a Mars retrograde in 2020, Mars has been in Aries since June 27, 2020. It was retrograde from September 9^th through November 13^th. If you were feeling stuck and unable to move forward to pursue your desires this fall, this is yet another reason in addition to the pandemic.

I know that Mars rules Aries and is very comfortable there, but it can be impulsive, impatient and lack the ability to see things through.  Mars moves into Taurus on January 6^th and is there until March 3, 2021. You will definitely notice a difference in the energy.  We will have a more determined focus as we are more resolute and patient.  Slow and steady will be our new mantra.  Our goal will shift to longevity and long-term satisfaction as we shift our priorities to finances, security and enjoying earthly pleasures. We are more able to see the big picture when Mars is in Taurus and we are able to stick to what needs to be done because Taurus is a fixed sign.  Spoiler alert, folks, fixed signs are feeling more pressure to perform this year now that Jupiter and Saturn are in Aquarius, joining Uranus and Mars in Taurus.  This includes Scorpio and Leo too. Material comfort will become more important to us because Taurus is ruled by pleasure-loving Venus.  So a little shopping for treats might be in store for us during this transit.
