Mars Opposes Pluto for the Third Time, a New Moon in Taurus and Venus Returns to Aries

 

The month of April is quite literally going out with a bang.  On April 26, we have the third opposition between Mars and Pluto.  The first one occurred on November 3, 2024 with Mars in 29 degrees of Cancer and Pluto in 29 degrees of Capricorn.  The second one happened on January 2, 2025 with Mars in 1 degree of Leo and Pluto in 1 degree of Aquarius.  The one on April 26 occurs with Mars in 3 degrees of Leo and Pluto in 3 degrees of Aquarius.  When these two planets are facing off, the themes are tension, power struggles and control issues.  Mars in Leo does have the potential to give us the courage to break free of our fears and enter a new era that has a strong theme of transformation.  But we need to be mindful that anger could erupt and impulsive actions are possible.

The influence of Mars opposing Pluto is feeding into the New Moon in 7 degrees of Taurus on April 27.  Yes, folks, we have a T-square with the Sun and Moon in Taurus involving Mars in Leo and Pluto in Aquarius that is testing our personal power limits while providing plenty of anger and frustration.  Mars and Pluto squaring the New Moon in Taurus makes it a whole lot more stressful than the usual New Moon in Taurus, which is generally associated with planting the seeds for secure foundations in our lives to create some stability.

But unless you have been living under a rock, I am sure you are aware that we are not living in stable or secure times.  Far from it.  I don't think that I am off the mark when I say that this New Moon in Taurus will probably feel like a Full Moon to many people, courtesy of that fixed T-square.  T-squares provide tension, but they do have a motivating factor.  There is a strong theme of release with this New Moon.  If you have any planets or points (like the Ascendant, Midheaven, IC or Descendant) in 0-7 degrees of the fixed signs of Aquarius, Taurus, Leo or Scorpio, you will be feeling this energy quite acutely.  Fixed signs do not exactly embrace change with open arms, so it can be tough.  And with Pluto playing such a major factor, the rebirth process can be painful and difficult. What do you need to release in your life that is no longer serving your best interests?

 

New Moons are future-oriented and we can't overlook the fact that Venus and Saturn in Pisces have been conjunct the North Node in Pisces.  The North Node represents our collective destiny and our soul's mission.  Venus and Saturn were conjunct in 27 degrees of Pisces on April 24.  Venus will be in 28 degrees of Pisces on the New Moon and Saturn will be in 27 degrees of Pisces still conjunct the North Node in 27 degrees of Pisces on the New Moon.  The theme of Venus conjunct Saturn is a reality check but it can also entail acts of kindness and compassion that we need to carry forward.  Both Venus and Saturn will be departing the sign of Pisces soon to enter Aries, so try to embrace this concept.  Venus is exalted in the sign of Pisces because of its capacity for compassion, empathy and unconditional love. I know that I am grateful for the small acts of kindness that I have been the recipient of during this past week and I think that this can be a starting point of reflection for all of us if we are to fulfill the mission of that North Node in Pisces.

Speaking of Venus, it enters Aries on April 30 and remains in Aries until June 6.  But Venus was previously in Aries from February 4 through March 29.  Who can forget the Venus retrograde transit that occurred from March 1 until April 12?  Venus stationed retrograde in 10 degrees of Aries in March and stationed direct in 24 degrees of Pisces on April 12.

Venus is spending a lot of time in Aries in 2025.  When Venus is in Aries, we are more independent, impulsive, bold and adventurous.  We tend to be more proactive and inclined to take risks.  We are also more impatient, blunt and love the thrill of the chase.  Financially it can be a time to invest in yourself.  Yes, Venus is the planet associated with love, but it also rules finances.  In mid-May, Venus will hit the Solar Eclipse point of 9 degrees of Aries and will also return to 10 degrees of Aries, where it stationed retrograde on March 1.  So we could very well be dealing with some unfinished business in love and finances.  Indeed it can be a time when we are not afraid to pursue love and financial gain.  We could be revisiting themes from earlier in the year.

The coronavirus outbreak caused me to increase the number of distant Reiki sessions I do because people were concerned about the spread of the infection. I have decided to suspend my in-person Reiki sessions until further notice, so all of my Reiki sessions will be distant Reiki sessions for the foreseeable future. But a distant Reiki session is the perfect opportunity to safely build up your immune system and if you have contracted coronavirus, you can be treated safely from the comfort of your home. My procedure is to have a conversation with a client about what they hope to achieve from a session, we set up a time for the session to take place when they will be in a state to receive healing energy and I follow up with a telephone conversation to discuss their experience and my perception of their blockages. I do miss seeing my clients, so I am now offering Zoom consultations/intakes before the session so that we can see each other. Pluto is Calling the Shots with a Fixed T-Square as We Face a New Moon in Taurus, Mars Entering Leo and the Sun Moves into Gemini

 

Pluto in Aquarius is really flexing its muscles these days. Pluto is like the Roto-Rooter planet of the zodiac in that it forces us to dredge up what needs to be purged for rebirth. Jupiter just entered Taurus on May 16 and on May 17 it formed a challenging square to Pluto in Aquarius.  On that day I tweeted:

The first aspect that Jupiter in Taurus makes is a square to Pluto in Aquarius today. We want rebirth and change but can become obsessive and fanatical about it. It can be uncomfortable. #astrology

On May 19, we have New Moon in 28 degrees of Taurus.  A New Moon in Taurus has themes of shining light on our material possessions, comfort and sense of security.  We should definitely be setting new intentions in these areas of our life.  Saturn in Pisces is forming an exact sextile to Mercury in 6 degrees of Taurus, which is a boost for making plans for the future.  The New Moon is also forming a supportive sextile to Mars in 29 degrees of Cancer, helping us to find the courage to act on those intentions.  But the New Moon in 28 degrees of Taurus is also forming an out-of-sign trine to Pluto in 0 degrees of Aquarius.  This can have a very empowering vibe.  Overall, this New Moon can be quite favorable.  The shadow side of this New Moon is that we might have a tendency to overspend or overindulge in unhealthy habits.  Just be mindful of that...

The plot thickens on May 20 when Mars enters Leo, where it stays until July 10. Mars in the fixed fire sign of Leo will give us more confidence, creativity and foster our leadership skills.  But on that same day Mars in Leo opposes Pluto in Aquarius.  This can be very nasty and is definitely war-like energy.  We can find ourselves being very angry and reactive.  If anyone has natal Mars-Pluto aspects, they know how triggering it can be.

Mars in Leo also comprises a fixed T-square along with Jupiter in Taurus and Pluto in Aquarius.  A T-square occurs when two planets are opposing each other and they square a third planet, which is the focal or apex point.  So we have Mars in 0 degrees of Leo opposing Pluto in 0 degrees of Aquarius and they both square Jupiter in 0 degrees of Taurus.  The opposition creates a confrontational nature and a need to balance relationship patterns.  The square represents obstacles we must face in order to make progress.  This is a fixed T-square, so it feels like stuck energy.  Jupiter is the focal planet, and it represents growth and expansion, while Pluto is associated with power and transformation.  And Mars is all about taking action on our desires, but it can also bring conflict.  So this is a pretty heady mix.  

On May 23, Mars in Leo will be forming an exact square to Jupiter in 1 degree of Taurus.  This is a very explosive vibe but it does provide us with the energy to start new projects and take risks.  It's also very impulsive energy.  We need to be mindful not to attack others.  There can be a tendency to burn out and experience physical or emotional exhaustion.

If you factor in the Nodes of the Moon, we also have a Grand Fixed Cross.  The North Node of the Moon is currently in 3 degrees of Taurus and the South Node of the Moon is in 3 degrees of Scorpio.  This gives us four planets or points squaring each other and it creates major tension and turmoil.  My motto is to never overlook the Nodes.  They are extremely important in terms of where we are going (North Node) and where we have been (South Node). When I first started studying astrology, I thought that the most difficult aspect that I had in my chart was my Mars in Aquarius squaring Saturn in Scorpio.  Of course, back then, I was undergoing my first Saturn Return and I was not very happy with the planet Saturn.  

When I started studying the Nodes, I realized that the most difficult and challenging piece of my chart was my North Node in Capricorn.  The North Node represents what our soul is trying to achieve, and it can feel like an uphill journey because it goes against the grain of your South Node, which is second nature to us. My South Node is in Cancer, which can make me very emotional and wanting to take care of people.  Yet a North Node in Capricorn is about setting goals and achieving them.  The trick is to balance achieving your goals with your home life. I remember reading a book by Michael Lutin about the Nodes years ago when he described a scenario with the North Node in Capricorn individual: they are on stage getting an award for their achievements when they get a phone call about a family emergency.  Did that one ever resonate for me! If you have any fixed planets or points like your Ascendant or Midheaven in 0-3 degrees of Aquarius, Taurus, Leo or Scorpio, you will be feeling the effects of this T-square and Grand Cross big time.  I should know, because I have my natal Mercury in 0 degrees of Scorpio.  I am definitely feeling the effects of Pluto squaring my Mercury and Jupiter opposing it.  And now Mars in Leo will be squaring it, which should make me even more irritable. I also have a Yod in my chart involving my Moon in Gemini, Saturn in Scorpio and North Node in Capricorn.  A Yod has a way of making one feel "why does this always happen to me?"

On May 21, the Sun leaves Taurus and enters the mutable air sign of Gemini.  When the Sun is in Gemini, we tend to focus on socializing, networking and craving communication that is intellectually stimulating.  Gemini is also a sign associated with choices and variety, so its shadow side can involve making too many commitments and spreading ourselves too thin.   But the Sun in Gemini does form a delightful trine to Pluto in Aquarius on that day, so we have a sense of empowerment in our energy for transforming our future.

Mercury and the Sun Enter Libra and an Illuminating Full Moon in Aries

Get ready for a major shift in energy.  I know that many of us are still reeling from the Mars/Uranus square on September 18, 2018, when I tweeted:

Today is the 3rd and final Mars in Aquarius/Uranus in Taurus square. Expect volatility and disruptive energy to rule the day. Be mindful of impetuous actions we could later regret. #astrology

We are about to enter a hopefully more peaceful and loving time as Mercury and then the sun enters Libra, the sign renowned for its love of peace and the seeker of balance.  On September 21, 2018, Mercury enters Libra until October 9, 2018. That’s right, it’s a quick sojourn because Mercury is in direct motion and moving at a breakneck speed.

Mercury in Libra will deliver communications that are charming, tactful, diplomatic and maddeningly indecisive.  Don’t be surprise if you hear the phrase “What do you think?” muttered frequently between now and October 9, 2018.  When Mercury is transiting the sign of Libra, we tend to be more accommodating towards others because we are more inclined to consider the points of views of others.  And that can have a nice payoff in terms of arriving at fair conclusions.

The sun will enter the sign of Libra on the following day, September 22, 2018.  That is also the official end of the fixed T-square involving Venus in Scorpio, Mars in Aquarius and Uranus in Taurus that has been active since approximately September 11, 2018.  If any of you have planets in the early degrees (0-4 degrees) of the fixed signs of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius, you have been feeling this tense energy.  A T-square stimulates drive and courage while simultaneously generating tension and conflict.  A fixed T-square can be persevering, but the shadow side is stubborn, unyielding and holds on to frustrations for far too long.  My Mercury in Scorpio has been in the crossfire of this one.

But the sun in Libra ushers in a time of generally feeling nicer as we seek to balance the energy, which is a welcome respite after the turbulence of the Mars Uranus square and recent fixed T-square. When the sun is in Libra, we are more inclined to compromise and negotiate in our relationships, sometimes to the point of giving in too much.  We need to learn to receive as well as give and we may find it difficult to make decisions.  That will be exacerbated this year by the fact that Mercury is in Libra during most of the same time the sun is.  But the sun in Libra is a delightful time to be sociable, tactful, and diplomatic.  Just be mindful of the shadow side of Libra to be passive-aggressive and superficial.

On September 23, 2018, Mercury in Libra will be trining Mars in Aquarius and this aspect augurs well for energetic and rational communications. Having the sun in Libra setting off this aspect makes it all the sweeter because it will have a tendency to bring more peace and love after a turbulent week astrologically.

But we do have full moon in 2 degrees of Aries on September 24, 2018.  And this one is no shrinking violet.  It will be conjunct Chiron in 0 degrees of Aries, so it has the potential to shine some light on much of the suffering that has been going on in the world, both personally and globally.  Mars in Aquarius has been conjunct the south node in Aquarius, so there is the distinct possibility that unresolved issues could resurface for some healing.  This full moon has a strong relationship theme in terms of restoring balance and equality.  And there could be even more disturbing weather events in addition to Hurricane Florence.

Saturn in Capricorn also factors in heavily in this full moon.  Both the sun in Libra and moon in Aries square Saturn in Capricorn.  Saturn will be testing our relationships.  The weak ones may not survive, but a fundamentally strong relationship will be consolidated as a result of this full moon.  Saturn in Capricorn is demanding that we accept responsibility in our relationships.  Issues of inequality and a lack of fairness will be addressed.  Saturn in Capricorn may even have a stabilizing effect on world leaders with this full moon.  This full moon will have far-reaching effects both personally and globally.
