Healing the Shadow with New Moon in Scorpio

The sabian symbol for the upcoming new moon in 8 degrees of Scorpio on October 30, 2016 is “A calm lake bathed in moonlight.  A quiet openness to higher inspiration.”

The sabian symbols were produced in 1925 by clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler with the help of astrologer Marc Edmund Jones in Balboa Park in San Diego, California.  I usually don’t pay much attention to sabian symbols, but reading about this one resonated for me big time.

This new moon in Scorpio holds enormous potential for personal power, soul searching, purging toxins, and finding the courage to face our shadow so that we can transform stagnation into growth.  Obviously it is a deeply spiritual new moon linked to transformation (it’s in Scorpio, remember) and letting go of the old patterns that no longer serve our highest good.  Mercury and Neptune are major players in this new moon.  Mercury in Scorpio is conjunct both the sun and moon and Neptune in Pisces forms a sweet trine, enhancing and emphasizing the capacity for understanding, empathy and forgiveness.  Neptune’s trine to the sun and moon also holds the potential for miracles, healing and mysticism.

While this new moon sounds very promising with all of these lovely positive aspects the road leading up to it was a bit rocky.  The moon in Libra from October 27-29 was not so nice and people pleasing; it wreaked its fair share of turmoil and damage in relationships.  That Libra moon squared Pluto in Capricorn on October 28^th, triggering some power struggles. On the following day, still under the auspices of the Libra moon, Mars in 21 degrees of Capricorn squares Uranus in 21 degrees of Aries, opening the floodgates for bizarre occurrences to occur that will pose a serious challenge to relationships, especially with that Libra moon squaring Mars in Capricorn.   

Despite the fact that Saturn and Neptune are no longer forming an exact square (they are now 5 degrees apart), we are still feeling their influence of questioning clarity, honesty and authenticity.  And it didn’t help when that Libra moon formed an irritating, challenging inconjunct or quincunx to Neptune in Pisces on October 28^th.  More adjustments and challenges to what is real, especially in relationships.

But on October 30, 2016 we should be focusing on the power and strength of that new moon in Scorpio.  It is always a good idea to set new intentions on a new moon, and with a new moon in the deeply spiritual sign of Scorpio, our focus should be on creating a daily anchor for our spirituality.  Meditation, self-healing or affirmations are fine examples of the types of spiritual anchors we can incorporate into our daily lives. I like to meditate and do a little Reiki on myself each day, but the options are infinite.

I also have a vested interest, so to speak, in this new moon because it is aspecting my chart very intensely.  It conjuncts my Saturn in Scorpio in my 1^st house, sextiles my north node in Capricorn in the 3^rd house and trines my south node in Cancer in my 9^th house.  I feel like I am literally being propelled to let go of the past (south node in Cancer) while establishing new structure in my life while facing my shadow side and overcoming fears and limitations (Saturn in Scorpio) while pressing forward with my life purpose by communicating more responsibly with my tribe (north node in Capricorn in the 3^rd house).

Scorpio - The Season of Transformation and Empowerment

Brace yourself, folks.  We are about to enter my personal favorite time of year, the Scorpio season, which is truly a time of transformation and empowerment.  In addition to the astrological sign for Scorpio, I have included the Death card from the Celestial Tarot Deck in this post because it represents the Scorpio energy of rebirth. This card may be called Death, but by no means is it death on a physical level.  It has much more to do with a death of the old way of life and a rebirth into a new consciousness for the soul.  Scorpio loves crisis and is drawn to it like a moth to a flame because it views crisis as an opportunity for growth.  Scorpio is not a sign for the faint of heart and is inclined to probe the depths.  We have a month of intensity in store for us.

The Sun enters Scorpio on October 22, 2016, but the build-up to this energy began on October 19, 2016 when Mars and Pluto formed a conjunction in 15 degrees of Capricorn.  Mars and Pluto are the co-rulers of Scorpio, so this was no minor aspect to be taken lightly.  On that day I tweeted:

“Powerful Mars/Pluto conjunction in Capricorn today blends aggression with ambition to achieve goals.  Slight risk of bullying.”

The Mars/Pluto conjunction is all about taking charge, with Mars representing personal energy and courage while Pluto pertains to power, a higher will and a new chapter in soul growth.  I also find it supremely ironic that the third and last Presidential debate in the United States occurred on October 19^th, fully demonstrating the energies of Mars and Pluto in action.

What else can we expect when the Sun is in the sign of Scorpio?  Scorpio is all about depth, intimacy and extremes of feeling.  As a Scorpio, I can personally attest to the fact that Scorpios tend to either love or hate; they have a hard time finding the middle ground due to their intense, passionate, strong-willed nature.  Superficiality and mediocrity just don’t cut it when the Sun is in Scorpio.  Prepare for a time of deep soul searching.  Jealousy, vindictiveness and manipulation could rear their ugly heads during the sun’s transit through Scorpio until November 21, 2016. But there is enormous potential for healing and transformation to occur and for us to literally become the most evolved symbol of Scorpio, the Phoenix, who rises from the ashes.  The Sun in Scorpio is a time of deep soul growth and regeneration.  It can also be an opportunity to reclaim some of the power that we have given away.  While Scorpio is indeed a very powerful sign, many Scorpios deal with the issue of giving their power way and when the Sun is in Scorpio, they have a green light to reclaim some of that power.

While Venus may now be playing happily in the more light-hearted sign of Sagittarius (it left Scorpio on October 18^th), Mercury is about to enter Scorpio on October 24, 2016, where it resides until November 12, 2016.  Mercury in Scorpio is like a human surveillance camera because it doesn’t miss a trick with their observation skills and isn’t afraid to convey their perceptions. Strategy will be highlighted when Mercury is in Scorpio, which is another example of reclaiming power. Mercury will meet up with and form a conjunction to the Sun in 3 degrees of Scorpio on October 27, 2016.  Watch for communication to be very focused and laser sharp on that day, with a tendency towards the sarcasm that Scorpio is renowned for.  Beware the Scorpio stinger on October 27^th and don’t be surprised if there is a spike in obsessive and compulsive behaviors on that day as well.

The season of Scorpio is a perfect time to embark on your own personal journey of transformation and empowerment. Astrology and tarot are valuable tools on the path of spiritual growth. Don’t waste the opportunity for healing and transformation that Scorpio season provides.

Neptune Direct and Farewell Scorpio Season

Neptune stationed direct in 7 degrees of Pisces on November 18^th at 11:31 a.m.and we are still feeling the repercussions of that station.   In addition to being a Scorpio, I am also very much a Neptunian with Neptune in the first house conjunct my ascendant.  I tried to inject a positive spin on this astrological event when I tweeted the following on November 18^th:

“There is more potential for dreams to become a reality today as Neptune in Pisces stations direct after 5 month retrograde.”

I also loved the way fellow astrologer Kristin Fontana described Neptune going direct:

“The emotional fog will dissipate and you can see the truth for what it is no matter how bitter the taste at times.”

Neptune’s station has the unnerving quality of making you wonder if you’re blessed with divine insight or losing your mind.  Self-deception can prevail when Neptune is about to make a station as we question reality.  It’s a common theme that I have heard from my clients recently—why is this happening to me and is it real?  But Neptune can also generate compassion, and I am trying to rely on that to get me through the adjustment period of Neptune stationing direct.  We all know that when a planet stations direct or retrograde, the energy of that planet will be intensified for a few days until it settles into its new direction.  Neptune has been retrograde since June 12, 2015 and I know that it has been an intense time for a lot of people.

On November 19^th the moon moved into Pisces, inspiring me to tweet a sentiment that seemed to resonate for many of my followers:

“Moon enters Pisces today and conjuncts Neptune tonight.  Expect to feel either inspired or delusional.  Still adjusting to #NeptuneStation.” 

The theme of a reality check emerges big-time on November 26^th when Saturn in Sagittarius forms an exact square Neptune in Pisces in 7 degrees of both signs.  This is Thanksgiving Day in the United States and it is also a full moon.  It should be an interesting day and time will tell if that 7 degrees is lucky or not.

In the meantime, the Sun is preparing to exit the sign of Scorpio.  It will enter the sign of Sagittarius on November 22^nd.  The Scorpio Sun conjuncted Mercury in Scorpio in 24 degrees on November 17^th, inspiring me to tweet:

“Sun conjunct Mercury in Scorpio bodes well for in-depth communication.  Last call to get to the root of the matter.”

That aspect conjuncted my natal Venus in Scorpio in the second house.  I did find myself engaged in conversations about my values and had an interesting telephone consultation with a new astrology client which proved to be very illuminating for both of us. It was definitely a day when mental adjustment about our reality was in order.  But Mercury will leave Scorpio on November 20^th at 2:43 p.m. and enter the more open, free-wheeling sign of Sagittarius.  I sense that the Scorpionic energy will still dominate that day because we also have Venus in Libra squaring Pluto in Capricorn in 12 degrees at 9:02 p.m.  Relationships may very well experience a lot of obsessive energy, which is Scorpio at its core.

Scorpio is an extremely complicated sign and experiencing it at its fullest can be exhausting because of the depth and intensity that it entails.  It is the only sign in the zodiac that has three animal symbols: the Scorpion, the Eagle and the Phoenix.  The Scorpion dwells in the darkness and holds onto negativity and resentments.  It is renowned (or reviled) for its venomous verbal sting.  Yet the Eagle soars higher in the sky and closer to the light by trying to attain a higher perspective.  It is a balancing act between the light and the shadow, which is not always comfortable or easy.

And then there is the Phoenix, which is all about embracing the process of transformation, which is an integral part of the Scorpio persona.  The Phoenix sets it nest on fire and is consumed by the flames in order to be reborn.

Personally, I can attest to the fact that I have had the full blown Scorpio experience in the past few weeks.  I have been forced to confront my own negativity and feelings of resentment recently while trying to heal and make peace with these shadow sides of myself.  It doesn’t help matters that I also have Mercury in Scorpio, so I am definitely not immune to the tendency towards lashing out verbally.  So I have been down and dirty with the Scorpion, attempted to soar like an eagle to rise above the fray, and am also embracing the concept of transformation and rebirth embodied by the Phoenix because deep down I know that rebirth is necessary. But as I have often said, rebirth ain’t pretty.  Letting go is hard work.  I am very grateful that my astrology, Reiki and psychic work is a constructive outlet for me because I tend to attract clients with similar issues who help heal me as much I help heal them.  It never ceases to amaze me what I can learn about myself from my clients. Like most people, I struggle with the ego trying to rule my life, when the bottom line is that sometimes you have to let go of that ego and face your shadow side

I think that facing our shadow side so that we can transform our lives into something more positive and healthy is the mission of the Sun in Scorpio.  But it is an intense ride, so most of us tend to welcome its departure.  Sagittarius has a much lighter, open vibe and is just what we need to usher us into the holiday season.  Happy Thanksgiving to all of my readers in the United States!

Uranus Square Pluto - Take 6 of the Revolution

Brace yourself, folks. The sixth of seven Uranus in Aries Pluto in Capricorn squares will be exact on December 15, 2014 in 12 degrees of each sign. Anyone with cardinal sign planets (Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn) between 10-16 degrees will feel its impact, especially in the area of relationships. This is definitely going to be a game changer because Uranus represents revolution and sudden change while Pluto represents transformation. But Pluto in Capricorn is still clinging to its conservative roots while trying to maintain its power base. I loved the way astrologer Georgia Nicols described the Uranus Pluto squares as "Between 2012 and 2015, these two planets bang heads seven times."

Some of us may have already felt its influence on December 8th when the Cancer moon opposed Pluto in Capricorn and squared Uranus in Aries. I would wager that many of us might have had some old insecurities triggered as a prelude to the December 15th face-off.

Revolutions are indeed taking place around us. Racial violence and campus demonstrations against rape are rampant. I really feel like I am being transported back to the 1960's when I was growing up watching race riots and campus demonstrations on TV. And this is no accident- back in 1965-66, Uranus and Pluto were conjunct in Virgo. Whenever these two planets tangle, upheaval is sure to follow.

History was always one of my favorite subjects and I decided to look at the Uranus Pluto square through the lens of history. The last time we experienced a Uranus Pluto square was back in 1932-34. Ironically, Uranus was in Aries back then, but Pluto was in the sign of Cancer and had just been recently discovered as a planet. What was going on back then? Plenty-the Great Depression and the rise of dictators like Hitler and Mussolini. Personally, I have been saying for the past three years that Uranus in Aries was partially responsible for the economic instability that has been raging and history bears an astrological link to prove  that. Our current economic downturn actually began in 2008 when Pluto entered Capricorn. And the battle rages to preserve the wealth of the haves while the rest of us feel adrift in an economic tsunami. But in the 1930's when Pluto was in Cancer, there was more of a struggle to hold the family together in tough economic times. At least this is what I remember my astrology teacher telling me in class. She was a member of the Pluto in Cancer generation and told us it was it was quite a battle to keep the family (a Cancer ruled sign) together during the Depression. Her students back then in the 1980's were comprised of those born with Pluto in Cancer, Leo and Virgo and she definitely could discern the difference between the generations!

I was blown away by Michael Lutin's comparison of the current Uranus Pluto square to the Uranus Pluto conjunction back in 1965-66 on December 10^th on his site www.michaellutin.com.  He said:

"We are now at the juncture of that conjunction Uranus square Pluto. The notion of a better society is being severely challenged."

Michael Lutin also captured the feeling and mood of the Uranus Pluto square with the following lines:

"It's scary to go where you don't know where you're going or how to get there."

"Severance from the expected path is an excruciating, mystifying and terrifying possibility until you accept the fact that you must move forward and now go where you have never gone before."

The bottom line is that we need to accept that there are long-term trends and changes occurring. The wisest course of action is to accept the instability and create a p!an to improve your life by releasing whatever isn't working. The Uranus Pluto square is a call to action to make core changes in your life. Upheaval can bring fast healing.

I speak from experience as the first four squares aspected the nodes of my moon (Capricorn and Cancer) in the third and ninth houses. Believe me, you can't ignore Pluto on your north node! The last three squares aspect my Libra ascendant, so I won't be able to resist their call for change, either!

If you have any doubts that the Uranus Pluto square will affect relationships, consider this. Venus in Capricorn will conjunct Pluto on December 20th to deepen and transform relationships and Mercury in Capricorn will join Pluto on Christmas to open up the lines of communication.

Full Moon in Taurus--It's All About the Money

We are still under the influence of a full moon in 14 degrees of Taurus that occurred at 2:23 p.m. on November 6, 2014.  A full moon in Taurus has the potential for revealing secret attitudes about money, values and relationships. This particular full moon represents things that began at the time of the new moon in Scorpio on October 23rd, which was an extremely potent solar eclipse. Seeds were planted then but we may have more information now which can lead to a completely different attitude.

The last couple of times we had a Taurus full moon around 14 degrees occurred on November 11, 2011 at 18 degrees and on November 5, 2006 at 13 degrees. When I reflect on those times I recall feeling hurt by the actions of someone I trusted and cared about who made decisions affecting my life without any consideration or respect for my feelings. But this full moon in Taurus can bring karmic themes with others full circle. Perhaps it is time for me to balance those karmic scales once and for all.

Several other planets were featured heavily in this full moon. The full moon opposed Venus in Scorpio in addition to the Sun in Scorpio. And we all know that Scorpio rules the 8th house, which is other people's money. It also sextiled Chiron in Pisces, inspiring me to post these two tweets on November 6th:

"Taurus full moon sextiling Chiron in Pisces today symbolizes the pain and potential for healing and transformation."

"Taurus full moon opposing Venus in Scorpio puts the emphasis on relationships and seeds planted during October 23rd eclipse."

Uranus, Pluto and Mars were also key players in this full moon. Uranus and Pluto are moving closer to an exact square in December, but the Taurus full moon trined Mars and Pluto in Capricorn. Mars and Pluto will form an exact conjunction on November 10th, which can bring violent confrontation. And Uranus in Aries will square Mars in Capricorn on November 12th, which brings the promise of more disruption and the need for change.

Mercury will be moving back into Scorpio on November 8th and will finally be out of its retrograde shadow on November 10th, which coincides with the Mars Pluto conjunction in Capricorn. So this will mark the beginning of a "safe" period to make decisions regarding relationships. Confrontation or collaboration? It's your call.  Be mindful of the potential for stubbornness and breakups because this full moon was in the fixed sign of Taurus, which is renowned for being stubborn as a bull. And I can tell you from personal experience how stubborn a Scorpio can be!

Molly Hall's About.com weekly astrology article featured a section about the impact of the full moon falling in the 12 houses. I can attest to the fact that she nailed it for me with her description of it in the 8th house.   She said that the theme of this full moon could very well be about funding with strings attached if it occurs in your 8^th house. This resonated big time for me because the Taurus full moon occurred in my 8th house opposing my Saturn in Scorpio at the end of my 1st house. Finances are a major concern for me as I continue to establish my business and build a practice. She wrote about the issues of selling one's soul for stability and the need for deep inner change around self-worth while releasing toxic situations and people. Make no bones about it, themes of disillusionment and the need for transformation abound. Transiting Saturn in Scorpio is currently conjunct my Venus in the 2nd house while transiting Venus in Scorpio was conjunct my Saturn at the beginning of the week. Financial stability is important to me but I also need the freedom to pursue my own path of transformation.

I came across a quote from Vedic reader Maharani Rutan on the Taurus full moon that I would like to share with you.

"The Taurus energy will give rise to the Phoenix out of the ashes."

I don't know about you, but I am intent on channeling that inner Phoenix! It's time to work on integrating stability and transformation into our lives. It is literally a fusion of opposites.

Solar Eclipse in Scorpio: Blasting the Past

The solar eclipse in 0 degrees of Scorpio on October 23, 2014 was packed with emotional intensity, passions, fears and unmet needs. A Scorpio eclipse is about metaphysical endings, rebirth with a potent theme of letting the past remain in the past. The last time we had a solar eclipse in 0 degrees of Scorpio was on October 23, 1995- 19 years ago to the day! That's the way eclipses work; they repeat every 19 years.

This eclipse had  quite a build-up at the beginning of the week with the last days of the Sun and Venus in Libra conjunct the north node of the moon. Michael Lutin commented on his site that it triggered a lot of memories of the Sun Venus transit of 2012 and observed that while some relationships don't end, they may very well go to another level. All of that Libra energy naturally put the focus on relationships for this eclipse. The moon entered Libra on October 21st and the tone was so raw and palpable that I tweeted:

"Moon enters harmony seeking sign of Libra today but there is still an edgy feel with upcoming eclipse."

On October 23rd, the Sun, Moon and Venus entered the sign of Scorpio for this powerful solar eclipse that also trined Neptune in Pisces. This really put the emphasis on dreams, potential and spirituality. The Neptunian fog involved distinguishing between dreams and reality and then making them happen. A solar eclipse also provides energy, motivation and focus to initiate new endeavors.

Pallas Athena, the asteroid goddess of wisdom, also featured in this mix in 2 degrees of Scorpio, conjuncting the Sun, Moon and Venus. In her classic book Asteroid Goddesses, Demetra George describes Pallas Athena in Scorpio as bringing the unconscious into conscious awareness through healing techniques like hypnosis or past life regression. She also said that "Pallas Athena in Scorpio is the wisdom of insight - penetrating to the core and grasping the essence."

Pallas Athena conjunct the Sun increases our access to divine intelligence and the strength of will. Its connection to the moon strengthens intuition and psychic ability and joining Venus supports advancement in the arts, aesthetics and women's rights. And Pallas Athena trining Neptune specifically enhanced telepathic abilities and the capacity for healing. Venus, the Sun and Pallas Athena will all trine Neptune in Pisces on October 27th, 28th and 30th respectively.

I'd like to share with you something Molly Hall wrote in her About. com newsletter this week about Venus in Scorpio that I found very meaningful because I have my natal Venus in Scorpio.

"Scorpio is a sign of power - it engages the instinct to understanding its subtle dimensions. At the doorway to Scorpio (0 degrees) we're taking the plunge to seeing the energetic forces at work in any situation. We might catch a glimpse of power patterns in a relationship, or how we're giving our power over to something."

She continues with:

"What binds us to another even long after we parted ways? This eclipse potentially reveals the energetic binds, what's in need of scything off or transmuting."

Let's not forget that Saturn is still in Scorpio and Saturn in Scorpio is all about scything off and transmuting.

Molly Hall's final words on this eclipse are:

"It's a New Moon to draw back all your power and vitality, from anything or anyone that's sucking the soul. Scorpio rules toxins of all kinds - physical, spiritual, mental."

As for me, I have a vested interest in this eclipse. It is exactly conjunct my Mercury in Scorpio in my 1st house and I have my natal Pallas Athena in 9 degrees of Scorpio conjunct my Saturn in the 1st house. This is an intensely personal, highly emotional time for me, yet I look forward to reclaiming my personal power and I am relying on that Pallas Athena Saturn conjunction in Scorpio to provide me with the insight and patience to move forward.

I have been reflecting back on my life during that last solar eclipse in 0 degrees of Scorpio in 1995. It heralded in a new period in my life that changed the way I communicated (how could it not when it conjuncted my Mercury), made me feel more empowered with new responsibilities and ushered in a generally happier, more emotionally fulfilling time in my life. I can only hope that this eclipse, coupled with surviving my recent second Saturn Return, can bring me more of the same if I apply myself.
