Powerful New Moon in Aquarius and Mars Enters Aries

Mark your calendars, everyone, because January 27, 2017 is going to be a very big day astrologically.  The moon enters the sign of Aquarius in the wee hours of the morning and conjuncts the sun in 8 degrees of Aquarius at 7:07 p.m. for a powerful New Moon.   It is also the day that Mercury in 14 degrees of Capricorn exits its retrograde shadow.

The themes of a new moon in Aquarius include finding your truth and uniqueness with a dose of altruism to help the collective.  Aquarius is ruled by Uranus (that is where the uniqueness bit comes in) and it also all about the collective. This new moon has a very utopian theme as well in terms of searching for truth in the world and connecting with people of like-minded values.  The Aquarian energy delivers an infusion of independent views and new perspectives while simultaneously seeking to break free of the old ways and find liberating change.  It also holds the potential for inspiring a spiritual shift. The new moon in Aquarius is a pretty heady mix that is bound to inspire us to take action in whatever area of life it falls in your chart.  If you are wondering where this new moon is hitting your chart, please consider getting an astrological reading with me.

This new moon in Aquarius falls in my 4^th house of home, family and beginnings and endings in life and conjuncts my Mars in Aquarius.  I have been making a conscious effort to expand my home based business and find another office to practice Reiki in because not everyone can make it into Boston on Friday nights and my home is not centrally located for folks who use public transportation.  I have secured a sublet in a professional building in the Coolidge Corner section of Brookline, Massachusetts for Sunday afternoons and will be signing the paperwork on January 27^th.  I’ll keep you posted as to when I will start practicing in Brookline. 

Even though this new moon is in Aquarius, Pisces is still a prevailing factor in this new moon.  We still have Mars and Venus in their last days of Pisces, and Neptune and Chiron are firmly entrenched in Pisces as well.  Chiron is at 22 degrees of Pisces, and in many ways this marks the end of an era.  The last time Chiron was in this decanate of Pisces was 1966, and it was a year of massive world changes. The Pisces gang lends notes of sensitivity and creativity to this new moon, making it a highly emotional time.  Pisces energy also ensures that protecting the earth will become very important in 2017, which is already starting off to be a year of significant change in the world. Chiron and Venus are definitely heavy hitters in this new moon and set the stage for it earlier in the week.

Chiron and Venus formed a conjunction in 21 degrees of Pisces on January 25, 2017, inspiring me to tweet:

But the dominant factor in the new moon on January 27, 2017 is Venus in Pisces squaring Saturn in Sagittarius in 24 degrees of the respective signs.  Venus and Saturn squaring off with each other is bound to make us aware of our limitations as we strive for some kind of breakthrough yet feel stymied as we get close but still feel like we can’t quite touch it.  Love and finances will feel the pinch on this day and there may also be some ethical issues emerging.  Patience will be required to get us through this potentially rough patch. I hope this isn’t too depressing, but I just wanted to give everyone a heads up.

Mars will be in 29 degrees of Pisces on the new moon.  I know that I have mentioned it before, but it bears repeating: when a planet is in 29 degrees of a sign, it is frequently referred to as the critical or anaretic degree because it embodies the essence of a sign.  Mars in Pisces represents sensitivity and vulnerability.  On January 28, 2017, Mars will enter its home sign of Aries, kicking off a period of new starts and taking action.  But Mars in Aries is also very impulsive, restless and craves action.  It is very different from Mars in Pisces.  Mars in Aries lacks patience and lacks self-control as well. And Venus will enter Aries on February 3, 2017.  It too will be quite a game changer.  While Mars is right at home in Aries, Venus is going from its sign of exaltation in Pisces to one of its signs of detriment (the other one is Scorpio) in Aries.  The impulsiveness of Venus in Aries is not always a good thing.

On January 28, 2017 the Chinese Lunar New Year of the Rooster arrives.  It is a Fire Rooster Year, and we haven’t had one since 1957. The last year of the Rooster was in 2005 and was a Wood Rooster.  The bottom line is that the Rooster represents diligence and hard work.  Fire Roosters in particular are reputed to be trustworthy, punctual and responsible. That is something we can all embrace in the coming year.  Happy Lunar New Year!

Pisces Energy Reigns Supreme

The Sun may have just entered the sign of Aquarius, but there is a preponderance of planets in Pisces these days and the Piscean themes of healing, escapism and surrender prevail.  Today, Mars is in 23 degrees of Pisces, Venus is in 17 degrees of Pisces, Chiron is in 21 degrees of Pisces, Neptune is in 10 degrees of Pisces and the south node is in 3 degrees of Pisces.  All of these Pisces planets have been very busy interacting with each other, Jupiter in Libra and Saturn in Sagittarius.

On January 16, 2017 Mars in Pisces conjuncted Chiron in 21 degrees of Pisces, inspiring me to tweet:

Mars conjunct Chiron in Pisces today can leave us feeling vulnerable and in touch with our pain. But it's a path to healing. #astrology

The bottom line with this aspect is that it forced many of us to get in touch with our deepest pain and wounds to facilitate the healing process.

A couple of days later on January 18, 2017 Mars in 22 degrees of Pisces formed a challenging, irritating aspect called the inconjunct or quincunx to Jupiter in 22 degrees of Libra.  On that day I tweeted:

Mars in Pisces is inconjunct Jupiter in Libra today which can require adjustments to avoid excessive behavior & escapism. #astrology

It is a given that inconjuncts or quincunxes require that some kind of adjustment be made so that the two planets involved can coexist peacefully.  But the deal with these two particular planets, especially with Mars in service oriented, escapist seeking Pisces is that it might involve an adjustment made on the part of Mars to be more self-assertive and pay attention to some much needed self-care instead of trying to take care of and please others, as represented by Jupiter in people-pleasing Libra. 

Mars in Pisces had another treat in store for us on January 19, 2017 when it squared Saturn in 23 degrees of Sagittarius.  As I noted in last week’s blog, I have this aspect natally and it ain’t pretty.  It is extremely frustrating and requires a lot of patience, which is not something I possess in great quantities. For me personally, with transiting Saturn in Sagittarius in my 3^rd house, it tended to manifest as communication snafus and frustrations.  It was like my own personal Mercury retrograde and I found myself experiencing major annoyances regarding items that I had ordered online that were either not shipped within a week or delivered.   On January 19^th, I tweeted:

We may feel like we are getting nowhere fast today as Mars in Pisces squares Saturn in Sagittarius. A very frustrating vibe. #astrology

But we also had the sun enter the sign of Aquarius on January 19^th.  I also tweeted on that day:

The conundrum with the sun in Aquarius and all of these Pisces planets is that neither the sun nor Mars is comfortable in either sign.  Uranus rules Aquarius and Mars rules Aries and Scorpio.  Mars in Pisces is literally like a fish out of water when it comes to direct action and the sun in Aquarius is not at its roaring best in terms of enthusiastic energy.  But with the sun in Aquarius we are guaranteed that change is here and all we can do is to rely on that renowned Aquarian detachment to embrace new ideas and situations while utilizing the Piscean qualities of faith and compassion to move forward.

January 20, 2017 is the day that the United States inaugurates its 45^th President of the United States.  Politically, it has been a highly unconventional year and many of us are anxious about the changes next four years will bring. The moon entered Scorpio on January 19^th and on January 20^th, it will trine Neptune in Pisces.  Let’s hope that some compassion can come through on this highly transitional day.  Venus in Pisces is also sextiling Mercury in Capricorn, putting the emphasis on values, communication. and the shift in power.  On January 21, 2017, the Scorpio moon will also trine Mars, Venus and Chiron in Pisces, offering opportunities for healing as well as highly charged emotional situations.  It will also sextile its ruling planet Pluto in Capricorn so the next few days will be intense and transformative, to say the least.

The south node of the moon remains in Pisces until May 14^th when it enters Aquarius as the north node simultaneously enters Leo.  There will be a definite change in the emotional and soul centered vibe from service oriented to self-expression. While the south node concludes its transit in Pisces, make the most of it by dissolving and releasing as much karmic baggage as possible.

One thing that we do have going for us astrologically right now is the fact that all of the planets are direct until February 6, 2017. Jupiter stations retrograde in 23 degrees of Libra on that date and remains retrograde until June 9, 2017 when it stations direct in 13 degrees of Libra. I get to have Jupiter back in my 12^th house for a while, which should be pretty sweet for my spiritual work.  We have a small window of time where all of the planets are direct, so it’s all systems go.  Make the most of it!

Healing the Shadow with New Moon in Scorpio

The sabian symbol for the upcoming new moon in 8 degrees of Scorpio on October 30, 2016 is “A calm lake bathed in moonlight.  A quiet openness to higher inspiration.”

The sabian symbols were produced in 1925 by clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler with the help of astrologer Marc Edmund Jones in Balboa Park in San Diego, California.  I usually don’t pay much attention to sabian symbols, but reading about this one resonated for me big time.

This new moon in Scorpio holds enormous potential for personal power, soul searching, purging toxins, and finding the courage to face our shadow so that we can transform stagnation into growth.  Obviously it is a deeply spiritual new moon linked to transformation (it’s in Scorpio, remember) and letting go of the old patterns that no longer serve our highest good.  Mercury and Neptune are major players in this new moon.  Mercury in Scorpio is conjunct both the sun and moon and Neptune in Pisces forms a sweet trine, enhancing and emphasizing the capacity for understanding, empathy and forgiveness.  Neptune’s trine to the sun and moon also holds the potential for miracles, healing and mysticism.

While this new moon sounds very promising with all of these lovely positive aspects the road leading up to it was a bit rocky.  The moon in Libra from October 27-29 was not so nice and people pleasing; it wreaked its fair share of turmoil and damage in relationships.  That Libra moon squared Pluto in Capricorn on October 28^th, triggering some power struggles. On the following day, still under the auspices of the Libra moon, Mars in 21 degrees of Capricorn squares Uranus in 21 degrees of Aries, opening the floodgates for bizarre occurrences to occur that will pose a serious challenge to relationships, especially with that Libra moon squaring Mars in Capricorn.   

Despite the fact that Saturn and Neptune are no longer forming an exact square (they are now 5 degrees apart), we are still feeling their influence of questioning clarity, honesty and authenticity.  And it didn’t help when that Libra moon formed an irritating, challenging inconjunct or quincunx to Neptune in Pisces on October 28^th.  More adjustments and challenges to what is real, especially in relationships.

But on October 30, 2016 we should be focusing on the power and strength of that new moon in Scorpio.  It is always a good idea to set new intentions on a new moon, and with a new moon in the deeply spiritual sign of Scorpio, our focus should be on creating a daily anchor for our spirituality.  Meditation, self-healing or affirmations are fine examples of the types of spiritual anchors we can incorporate into our daily lives. I like to meditate and do a little Reiki on myself each day, but the options are infinite.

I also have a vested interest, so to speak, in this new moon because it is aspecting my chart very intensely.  It conjuncts my Saturn in Scorpio in my 1^st house, sextiles my north node in Capricorn in the 3^rd house and trines my south node in Cancer in my 9^th house.  I feel like I am literally being propelled to let go of the past (south node in Cancer) while establishing new structure in my life while facing my shadow side and overcoming fears and limitations (Saturn in Scorpio) while pressing forward with my life purpose by communicating more responsibly with my tribe (north node in Capricorn in the 3^rd house).

Venus Comes Home to Libra

Venus enters its home sign of Libra on November 8^th and will stay there until December 4^th when it moves into the deep, penetrating sign of Scorpio.  Venus rules Libra and Taurus, so it will be very comfortable in Libra as it focuses on balance and harmony in relationships.  Charm is the name of the game with Venus in Libra and we are going to feel in major people pleasing mode with this transit.  Idealism about love will be prevalent as we seek balance in our personal affairs.  It will also be a boon for artistic and creative endeavors.

When Venus enters Libra on November 8^th it will also conjunct the north node in Libra.  This aspect will help guide us towards the future in relationships as we find it easier to engage in tactful communication and a sense of cooperation versus competiveness in relationships.  Venus conjunct the north node is automatically opposing the south node of the moon, which in turn helps us to release the past.

We are wrapping up the lessons of the north node in Libra and the south node in Aries before the north and south nodes move into the Virgo/Pisces axis on Friday, November 13^th.  The themes for the north node in Libra and south node in Aries pertain to learning to get along and releasing the combative, fighting tendencies that tend to crop up and destroy relationships.  We are literally in the home stretch of this transit that began when the north node entered the sign of Libra on February 19, 2014.  Think back to what was going on in your relationships back then and if things have changed in terms of reaching more balance and compromise.

When the north node moves into Virgo and the south node into Pisces on November 13^th, we will have new lessons to learn.  This transit will last until May 9, 2017, so we have plenty of time to work on those lessons.  The north node in Virgo guides us into the future by requiring us to get grounded, pay attention to details and come up with practical solutions while releasing the victim/martyr role and urge to escape.  The south node always seems to have a stronger pull on us because it is literally the path of least resistance and what we are inherently comfortable with.  Jupiter will be in Virgo until September 9, 2016 and Neptune will be in Pisces until 2025, so don’t count out the influence of these planets.

We have been the recipient of a lot of Virgo energy the past month with Mars, Venus and Jupiter in Virgo, but that particular Virgo party is ending. We do have the north node in Virgo jumping into the mix on November 13^th, which will have a very different feel.  Jupiter will remain in Virgo, but Venus enters Libra on November 8^th and Mars follows suit on November 12^th, the day after the new moon in Scorpio.  Mars will be in Libra until January 3, 2016. And then Mars will feel right at home in the sign of Scorpio. Despite the fact that Mars and Venus will be together in Libra for a few weeks, Mars is not a happy camper in the sign of Libra.  Mars is the planet of action that thrives on competition and conflict, and Libra is a sign that tends to be conflict averse and somewhat indecisive.   This can literally paralyze our ability to act if we overthink issues.  So forewarned is forearmed…

I am also looking forward to next week’s new moon in Scorpio on November 11^th in 19 degrees of Scorpio, which is exactly conjunct my Scorpio sun.  I am hoping it will be an important year ahead for me and energize me to seize the qualities of bravery, courage and boldness that a Scorpio new moon symbolizes.

Under the Influence of Libra - Season of Seeking Balance

The Sun may not enter the sign of Libra until September 22nd at 10:29 p.m. on the east coast for the Autumnal Equinox (farewell summer), but I would wager that many people have been feeling the Libra energy all week. Mercury and the north node of the moon have been dancing together since mid-September and they formed an exact conjunction on September 17th in 19 degrees of Libra. The themes of this aspect include making peace while simultaneously seeking justice, needing to move beyond the victim role and releasing the desire for revenge, and healing old wounds by saying the right words.

Mercury's conjunction to the north node in Libra prompted me to tweet on September 16th:

"Mercury in Libra's conjunction to north node facilitates peaceful communication in relationships this week."

The bottom line with this Libran influence is that transformation is necessary. Uranus in Aries has been forming a yod (aka the "finger of God") aspect with Venus in Virgo and Ceres in Scorpio. A yod occurs when two planets sextile (60 degrees) each other and inconjunct (150 degrees) a third. Venus and Ceres are playing nicely while forming a challenging aspect to Uranus. I love how astrologer Dietrech Pessin describes inconjuncts: "life's messy, clean it up aspect." A change is required in our attitudes toward relationships and values (the Venus piece) and our sense of self-worth and self-protection (the Ceres piece).

If you are questioning if yods are really all that powerful, I can assure you that they are because I have one in my chart. It involves my moon in Gemini, Saturn in Scorpio, and north node in Capricorn. I am living proof that this aspect has pretty much dominated my life. That moon/Saturn inconjunct has always felt like a cross to bear but integrating it with that north node in Capricorn is definitely challenging. The north node represents our soul's destiny, after all.

The theme of healing in relationships comes into play with Chiron in Pisces opposing Venus in Virgo and trining Ceres in Scorpio. It inspired me to tweet on September 17th:

"Venus in Virgo opposing Chiron in Pisces today can bring old wounds to the surface for healing."

Don't be surprised if you find yourself experiencing a new perspective on relationships in the coming month.  Pluto stations direct at 11 degrees of Capricorn on September 22^nd, the same day the Sun enters Libra.

The pace of the Libra energy intensifies as we have a new moon in 1 degree of Libra on September 24th on the east coast. The core themes of this new moon are reflecting on balance, compromising and peace. Libra may be symbolized by the scales of balance, but it doesn't necessarily mean that Libra is always in a state of balance; the key to understanding Libra is acknowledging its search for balance.

We have every right to be optimistic about this new moon because the Jupiter in Leo trine to Uranus in Aries is exact at 15 degrees of their respective signs on the following day, September 25th. This aspect galvanizes our passion for attaining our dreams and fuels our ambitions. September 25th also marks Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. What an astrologically auspicious beginning for a new year!

The Libra new moon is in my 12th house so it is a perfect time for me to retreat and prepare for a new cycle. Since the Sun is residing in my 12th house until October 10th, I know that my physical energy is at its lowest but I am eagerly anticipating its entry into my first house and the accompanying rush of energy that it brings.
