A New Moon in Cancer and Mercury Enters Cancer

 

Just in case you haven’t noticed, we are deep in the season of Cancer.  Not only is the Sun in Cancer, but we have a glorious New Moon in 18 degrees of Cancer on July 9.  Cancer is all about home, nurturing and care.  With a New Moon in Cancer, we are more attuned to our feelings and instincts. It’s time to set some new intentions in these areas of our life.  I say, bring it on!

Of course, the cardinal signs of Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn are going to feel this energy the most acutely.  Aries might be experiencing an addition to their family, a new home or cycle in their family life.  Cancer is entering a new personal cycle focusing on relationships.  Libra will feel this influence in their careers and social life, while Capricorn can also be entering a new cycle for partnerships and relationships.

What does the astrological weather look like for the New Moon?  Well, the Cancer Moon is forming a supportive sextile to Uranus in 14 degrees of Taurus, so we have an added boost to manifesting our wishes and they can do so in unexpected but pleasant ways. Yes, the Moon is also inconjunct Saturn in 11 degrees of Aquarius, which can be a bit of a drag, but it passes quickly.  My take on it is that it means we will have to adjust our expectations and take care of responsibilities.  The New Moon is also widely opposing Pluto in 25 degrees of Capricorn, which is a clear indicator that transformation is on the agenda.  It might be a good time to bury whatever emotional hatchets we have been holding onto.  We could be feeling that power is coming at us from all angles, but it is important to remember that the Pluto factor can represent our inner authority and power, so don’t be quick to give it away.  Emotional security is a top priority with a New Moon in Cancer.  Perhaps we should consider building a family that is not necessarily biological but shares our beliefs and values.  I like to call it a “framily”, which basically means that you have found your tribe.  Sometimes a framily can consist of friends that you choose to be your support system if you feel that your own family is too toxic to be around or no longer present.  It’s food for thought…

Mercury moves into Cancer on July 11 and stays there until July 27.  It seems like Mercury has been in Gemini forever, due to the recent Mercury retrograde.  Mercury has been in Gemini since May 3, which is indeed a long time.  But Mercury retrograde cleared it retrograde shadow on July 7, when I tweeted:

#MercuryRetrograde finally clears its shadow today and we should feel that we have a clearer picture mentally in terms of proceeding for the future. All of the mental cobwebs have been removed. #astrology

When Mercury is in Cancer, we are thinking on a deeper level as the mind and heart grow closer.  We are also communicating in a softer and more intimate manner.  We find it easier to let others know how much we care as we strive to nurture and protect them.  Our intuition is also more available and accurate when Mercury is sailing through the cardinal water sign of Cancer, so I encourage you to make the most of this transit.  On July 12, Mercury in Cancer will be trining Jupiter in 1 degree of Pisces, which is a very beneficial aspect for our intuition as it magically blesses our communication.  If you have any planets in the early degrees of the water signs Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, prepare for a nice little spiritual blast of good fortune.

On July 13, we have another juicy aspect. Venus and Mars are conjunct in 20 degrees of Leo, which can bring in new relationships and more social activity.  But it is widely opposing Saturn in 11 degrees of Aquarius and squaring Uranus in 14 degrees of Taurus.  Of course, once again the Saturn-Uranus square is being set off, so the themes here are financial volatility and taking responsibility for our actions.

The coronavirus outbreak is causing me to increase the number of distant Reiki sessions I do because people are concerned about the spread of the infection. I have decided to suspend my in-person Reiki sessions until further notice in order to practice social distancing. I no longer have my Brookline office, so all of my Reiki sessions will be distant Reiki sessions for the foreseeable future. At some point, probably in 2022, I will find a new space to practice. In the meantime, a distant Reiki session is the perfect opportunity to safely build up your immune system and if you have contracted coronavirus, you can be treated safely from the comfort of your home. My procedure is to have a conversation with a client about what they hope to achieve from a session, we set up a time for the session to take place when they will be in a state to receive healing energy and I follow up with a telephone conversation to discuss their experience and my perception of their blockages. I do miss seeing my clients, so I am now offering Zoom consultations/intakes before the session so that we can see each other. I have also incorporated a new technique with my distance Reiki treatments since I don’t always have a photo of my client.  I use a teddy bear so that I can scan and focus the healing energy where it is needed. Mars in Leo Sets off Fireworks to Begin the Month of July and Mercury Squares Neptune Take Three

I’m sure that it comes as no big surprise that Mars in Leo is very busy this month triggering the Saturn-Uranus square, the defining astrological theme of 2021.  The month of July kicked off with Mars in Leo forming an exact opposition to Saturn in 12 degrees of Aquarius.  On that day I tweeted:

The Aries Moon squaring the Sun in Cancer today exacerbates the Mars-Saturn opposition by making us even more impatient and focused on getting our needs met fast. Try to scale down expectations if possible. #astrology

It would be an understatement to say that it was a frustrating day.  As usual, I was right in the middle of the action. Mars and Saturn were exactly squaring my natal Saturn in Scorpio in my 1^st house and Mars was opposing my natal Mars in Aquarius in my 4^th house while Saturn was conjunct it.  And did I mention that Mars in Leo is currently transiting my 10^th house?  I wasn’t the happiest of campers on that day, to say the least.

On July 3, Mars in Leo is exactly squaring Uranus in 13 degrees of Taurus.  If you are still recovering from yesterday’s Mars hit, be prepared for some highly volatile energy on that day which will feature sudden outbursts, nervous energy and, I hate to say it, but it does exist: the potential for violence.  It is very unsettling energy and is further complicated by the fact the Moon is in Aries until 8:28 a.m. on the 3^rd, compounding the impulsive, me-first vibe.  But the Taurus Moon does having a saving grace aspect on the 3^rd: it forms a supportive sextile to Jupiter in Pisces which should help restore our faith somewhat. 

But on July 4, the United States’ birthday, the Taurus Moon conjuncts Uranus in Taurus and squares Mars in 14 degrees of Leo.  These aspects will only serve to ramp up the unpredictablity scale and it’s highly likely that tempers will flare.  Try to avoid traveling if possible and attending large gatherings.

We get another day to breathe on July 5, but July 6 features the third exact square of Mercury in Gemini to Neptune in 23 degrees of Pisces.  The first one occurred on May 22 a few days before the Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius on May 26 and the second one happened on June 5 when Mercury was retrograde and right before the Solar Eclipse in Gemini on June 10.  Both planets will be direct on this third hit, but I encourage everyone to reflect on what was happening in your lives back then.  Mercury in Gemini was very active in eclipse season and now that is in direct motion (clearing its retrograde shadow on July 7), we just might get some mental clarity on whatever issues were troubling us during the past six weeks.  It’s the third pass of this aspect, and I personally ascribe to the theory that it takes most of us until the third time an aspect is exact to fully absorb the lesson of it and move on.  Food for thought…

Venus in Leo is forming an exact opposition to Saturn in 12 degrees of Aquarius as well on the 6^th of July.  This is a red flag to warn us that we will probably be feeling overly sensitive on that day and our feelings could get hurt quite easily.  Venus-Saturn contacts are not exactly known for a warm and fuzzy vibe.

Neptune Stations Retrograde, Venus Enters Leo and Mars and Saturn Face Off

 

The month of June is proving to be quite momentous with all of the planetary activity and it ain’t over yet.  Jupiter stationed retrograde on the day the Sun also entered Cancer, inspiring me to tweet:

Jupiter stations retrograde in Pisces today before moving back into Aquarius at the end of July. It’s a time for soul searching and expanding our consciousness. It’s much easier than Mercury retrograde! #astrology

And of course, Mercury stationed direct (FINALLY) on June 22, although it doesn’t clear its retrograde shadow until July 7. But relief is in sight…

Next up is Neptune stationing retrograde in 23 degrees of Pisces on June 25.  Neptune is retrograde until December 1, 2021 when it stations direct in 20 degrees of Pisces.  Like Jupiter retrograde, this transit is not such a bad thing.  Neptune is associated with disillusionment, escapism, deception and dreams.  When Neptune is retrograde, our illusions can be stripped away and we can be taking off the rose-colored glasses.  As someone with a strong natal Neptune (in my first house conjunct my Mercury) I prefer to think of it as the Reality Bites transit. It offers us the opportunity to re-evaluate what’s important to us, what is real and do instead of dream.  Neptune retrograde can also reveal the pain that we have been trying to escape.  Like the Jupiter retrograde transit, it can be a very spiritual time that expands our consciousness by exposing our doubts and confusion.  The veil is lifted so to speak.

Venus is getting ready for a major attitude adjustment in the area of love.  On June 27 it leaves the cardinal water sign of Cancer for the fixed fire sign of Leo.  Venus remains in Leo until July 21.  Venus in Leo is all about fun, excitement, romance and drama.  Pride and passion rule and we can be quite generous with money. Don’t forget that Venus also governs money.  Be prepared to see lots of PDA’s because shows of public affection are part and parcel of Venus in Leo.  Just be mindful of the shadow side of Venus in Leo: it craves attention and adoration and is prone to arrogance.  But it can definitely bring some joy into our lives and we can all use that.

On July 1, Mars in Leo is in exact opposition to Saturn in 12 degrees of Aquarius.  Many of us have been feeling the effects already.  There is no sugar-coating this aspect; it brings frustration, disappointment and anger.  There can be difficulty in expressing anger, especially if you feel personally attacked.  And with Mars in Leo, it’s definitely personal. Watch out for bullying too. It can also indicate that you just might be your own worst enemy at this time.

Try to engage in some physical activity or exercise to release the frustration that Mars opposing Saturn creates.  Self-discipline, patience and determination are the tools we need to cope with this aspect.  The bottom line with Mars-Saturn aspects is that they have a way of making us work hard.  I know this from personal experience because I have my natal Mars in Aquarius squaring my natal Saturn in Scorpio.  Nothing comes easy for me and I have had to utilize every shred of self-discipline and determination that I have while developing patience (still a work in progress) to make any kind of progress in terms of achieving my goals.   And my Mars-Saturn square is being activated by this aspect.  Mars in Leo is in my 10^th house opposing my Mars in my 4^th house and squaring my Saturn in the 1^st house while Saturn in Aquarius is right on my Mars. 

Mars opposing Saturn requires us to find some balance between aggression and apathy because we will probably feel thwarted by authority figures. Saturn has a tendency towards depression which can lead to lethargy.  It’s also important to acknowledge the stabilizing effect that Saturn has, despite its bad rep for limiting and constraining us.  Saturn is the Great Teacher, but it also rewards us when we work hard.

A Busy Week Ahead as the Sun Moves into Cancer, Jupiter Stations Retrograde, Mercury Goes Direct and a Full Moon in Capricorn

 

Many of us are still reeling from the second Saturn-Uranus square on June 14^th, when I tweeted:

We have a tense day ahead today with Saturn in Aquarius squaring Uranus in Taurus for the the 2nd time this year. It’s a battle between structure and change. Expect issues from February to resurface. #astrology

But we are nowhere near done with the effects of the Saturn-Uranus square or the intensity.  On June 20, we have two major astrological events coming up: the Sun enters Cancer for the Summer Solstice and Jupiter stations retrograde in 2 degrees of Pisces.  The Saturn-Uranus square will be set off again on the 20^th because the Moon is in 9 degrees of Scorpio, setting off a very tense T-square with Saturn in 12 degrees of Aquarius and Uranus in 13 degrees of Taurus. There is bound to be some rebellious energy on tap as the themes of control, freedom and truth are raised.  It promises to be  a deeply emotional day because we also have a Grand Water Trine involving the Moon in Scorpio, Jupiter in Pisces and the Sun in Cancer. What is the best way to cope with all of this water energy?  We need to face our deepest emotions and wishes, because Jupiter has a lot to do with our wishes and it is strong in Pisces.

We also need to remember that we will be feeling even more emotional when the Sun is in Cancer and feeling the effects of the Moon more acutely because the Moon rules Cancer. There will be more of a tendency to be self-protective and our focus will shift towards our home life and nurturing others.

Jupiter stations retrograde in 2 degrees of Pisces on the 20^th and slips back into Aquarius on July 28^th until December 28, 2021 when it moves back into Pisces.  Jupiter does station direct on October 17^th in 22 degrees of Aquarius.  When Jupiter is retrograde, it is characterized by a period of spiritual introspection and reflection.  This is indeed a time when you need to create your own luck and good fortune by fine-tuning your perspective.

On June 22, Mercury stations direct in 16 degrees of Gemini after having been retrograde since May 29^th.  I don’t know about you, but this has been one of the most frustrating Mercury retrogrades that I can recall.  I have had issues with my cell phone, Internet service, medical appointment scheduling and messages not being conveyed.  I suspect that one of the reasons is that Mercury was retrograde in its home sign of Gemini, which exacerbated issues like these.  It would probably be just as challenging when Mercury is retrograde in Virgo, the other sign that it rules.  Fortunately the next Mercury retrograde in 2021 will occur in late September in the sign of Libra.  But while we are heaving a collective sign of relief about Mercury being direct, I would like to caution everyone that Mercury does not clear its retrograde shadow until July 7, so please don’t expect everything to be back to normal with communication and transportation for a few days.  Whenever a planet is stationing either direct or retrograde, its power is magnified.  But there is light at the end of the tunnel…

The next major astrological event occurs on June 24 with the Full Moon in 3 degrees of Capricorn.  A Full Moon in Capricorn has themes of responsibility, order, structure and age-related concerns.  And it will require that we achieve some measure of balance with these themes and the need to nurture. Try focusing on resilience and inner authority during this Full Moon. Full Moons are a time of revelations, so be aware that more truths could be revealed, especially as a result of the recent Saturn-Uranus square.  Of course, emotional explosions are definitely possible with the Moon in Capricorn forming an irritating inconjunct with Mars in Leo. If we make adjustments or compromises, these can be avoided. The themes of closure and completion also pertain to Full Moons, so you might want to think back to the New Moon in Capricorn on January 13, 2021, to review any projects that you began back then.  Are they completed or is there is some sense of resolution?

There are some positive aspects going for us on this Full Moon.  Jupiter in Pisces is forming a supportive sextile to the Full Moon and it trines the Sun in Cancer.  This configuration is urging us to let go of the past and focus on the new. Try not to look back with regrets.  Relationship issues are bound to surface on this Full Moon with Pluto in 26 degrees of Capricorn opposing Venus in 26 degrees of Cancer.  This aspect could impact the sign of Cancer, especially if they are in a relationship that they think is too controlling.  They might opt to stay in the relationship out of their need for security. And Saturn in Aquarius is also forming a supportive sextile to Chiron in Aries on the 24^th, so it is possible for emotional healing to occur if we are willing to do the work.

The coronavirus outbreak is causing me to increase the number of distant Reiki sessions I do because people are concerned about the spread of the infection. I have decided to suspend my in-person Reiki sessions until further notice in order to practice social distancing. I no longer have my Brookline office, so all of my Reiki sessions will be distant Reiki sessions for the foreseeable future. When it becomes clearer that the virus no longer poses a threat, I will find a new space to practice. In the meantime, a distant Reiki session is the perfect opportunity to safely build up your immune system and if you have contracted coronavirus, you can be treated safely from the comfort of your home. My procedure is to have a conversation with a client about what they hope to achieve from a session, we set up a time for the session to take place when they will be in a state to receive healing energy and I follow up with a telephone conversation to discuss their experience and my perception of their blockages. I do miss seeing my clients, so I am now offering Zoom consultations/intakes before the session so that we can see each other. I have also incorporated a new technique with my distance Reiki treatments since I don’t always have a photo of my client.  I use a teddy bear so that I can scan and focus the healing energy where it is needed. Mars Roars into Leo and the Second Saturn-Uranus Square of 2021

 

The motivational energy is about to take a radical shift on June 11 when Mars enters the fire sign of Leo where it reigns until July 29, 2021.  Mars has been in Cancer since April 23^rd and it was not a happy camper in Cancer.  Mars is uncomfortable in Cancer, and was more content to stay on the sidelines and fight for or with home life issues.  It is also associated with passive-aggressive behavior and feeling unable to fight for itself.  Mark my words, we are going from a time of taking care of others that Mars in Cancer symbolized to taking care of me, which is what Leo represents.  And it’s not a moment too soon for this to happen after all of the recent emotional drama.  We just had a Solar Eclipse in Gemini on June 10, inspiring me to tweet:

Today’s #SolarEclipse in Gemini packs quite the emotional punch with its conjunction to retrograde Mercury and square to Neptune in Pisces. More could be revealed but we won’t have total clarity until after Mercury goes direct. #astrology

The positive side of that Gemini Moon was that it had us talking as a means of healing.  My tweet on June 9 reflected that concept:

But now that Mars in Leo we are literally driven by a desire to enjoy life to the fullest and express ourselves.  Mars in Leo is characterized by high enthusiasm, craving attention, romantic gestures and full-blown assertiveness.  We are more passionate and dramatic but the shadow side is that we can become more egotistical and self-centered.  But it is still a welcome change from Mars in Cancer when we experienced bouts of indecisiveness.  Mars in Leo is all about Me, which is something we all need to embrace these days.  Ask yourself what makes you feel good and act on it through the end of July. Just try to be mindful of how your actions affect others.  It really is a perfect vibe for enjoying the summer.

And ta-da, on June 14, we have the second square of Saturn in Aquarius to Uranus in Taurus, exact in 13 degrees.  The first one occurred on February 17^th in 7 degrees when both planets were direct, the upcoming square features Saturn retrograde and the third one happens on December 24, 2021 in 11 degrees when Uranus is retrograde. There is no doubt that this is the astrological elephant in the room, the defining aspect of 2021 just like the Saturn-Pluto conjunction in Capricorn was in 2020. 

The Saturn-Uranus square is making us painfully aware of the cracks in the foundation in our society and the challenges we face in terms of making the big changes that Uranus wants but Saturn is controlling us by making us work hard to get those changes.  We can’t just snap our fingers and expect everything to change overnight.  The bottom line is that we need to make some very big decisions.  I loved what astrologer Anne Ortelee said about the cardinal signs of Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn starting to make the changes in February while the mutable signs of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces are getting their shot now.  And the fixed signs of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius will probably wait until December to make their changes because fixed signs are the most resistant to change.

The best way to deal with this energy is to let go of the past and go with the flow, which is far easier said than done, especially with the square occurring in fixed signs.  The Saturn-Uranus square can also have health implications, including accidents involving the bones and teeth (which are ruled by Saturn) and nervous energy. Uranus is very high-strung.  If either Saturn or Uranus makes contact with your Sun, Moon, Mars or Saturn you need to be super-vigilant about taking care of your health.

As an astrologer, I am seeing quite clearly how the Saturn-Uranus square is impacting me.  Transiting Saturn in Aquarius has been squaring my natal Saturn in Scorpio since late March 2021 and will continue through late July 2021.  I am questioning decisions that I made seven years ago trying to ascertain if they are still serving my best interests, and if not, how I can tweak them to be more productive and useful.  This is compounded by the fact that Saturn is also conjunct my natal Mars in Aquarius, which screams frustration at lack of progress.  This transit continues until late January 2022, so I am being forced to learn patience and take baby steps towards my progress.  And I have Uranus in Taurus opposing my Saturn in Scorpio, which is creating lots of internal pressure about the existing structure of my life and the limitations they impose upon me.  There is no quick fix for this one and I will need to learn what to keep and what to discard.  Uranus in Taurus is also forming a square to my Mars in Aquarius, which ramps up the frustration level and creates a very restless vibe.  I literally have my work cut out for me these days, just like my clients.
